Feeling Thankful

My husband went back to work yesterday. He's a physical education teacher so he had the summer off. Usually, he works at a summer camp as a camp director. Since Babycakes was born in late May, he decided to take the summer off. Since she's been born, he has only had to work a week and a half. I am so thankful that we were able to spend the first 3 months of Babycakes life together as a family.
I'm also thankful that he works so hard as a teacher and coach so I can be a stay at home to Babycakes. I know there are many moms who want to stay home with their little ones. I am so thankful I can.

Birth plans and Parenting Styles

Deciding on a parenting style is kind of like writing a birth plan. You have an idea of what you want and pray it goes your way. With a birth plan, you are deciding the very specific details of a birth that has yet to take place. Before you know what to fully expect, you decide who you want delivering your baby, whether or not you will use any pain medications, where you deliver, who is allowed in the room, what and how much intervention you will allow, etc. You can choose to plan as much or as little of the birth process as you want. The difficult thing about planning a birth is the fact that every birth is unpredictable and unique. Because of this, birth plans often get tossed right out the window which leaves many upset mommies.

The Glamorous Life of a Mother

Some moms make being a mom seem so glamorous. Their hair is perfect, their makeup is perfect and their outfits are put together perfectly. Their kids seem so organized and ready for school and/or activities. They seem like they're right out of a magazine; picture perfect. But is it always like that or is that just an image that they are able to portray? I want to see some brownie batter splattered onto their perfect white jeans and I want to see grass stains on their kids knees and I want to be reassured that their babies do, in fact, cry. That would make me feel a little bit better about myself as a mother.

Nap-tastic time for Cloth Diaper Giveaways!

I can't remember if I've mentioned this before, but Babycakes is not a napper. Her usual 'nap' is about 20 minutes long after a feeding in my arms. If I try to move, she wakes up. If I get up, she wakes up. If I've successfully gotten up without waking her, she wakes up when I try to put her down in her rock and play, swing or crib. If she falls asleep in my Ergo, she wakes up within 5 minutes of taking her out. Needless to say, I am one tired momma without a lot of free time! I get that as a  mommy of a bitty baby, 'me time' is no longer a word in my regular vocabulary. Still, it's nice to dream about.
That being said, Babycakes will usually take one long nap a week. And by long, I mean several hours in the afternoon. I wish they were every day, but I'll take what I can get! Today, she has been napping since 2:30; it's now 5:00.

Fluffy Bum!

I am proud to announce that Babycakes is finally able to fit into her cloth diapers! I knew I wanted to try cloth diapering before I even got pregnant so I started to build up my stash slowly but surely. I didn't want to have to buy many cloth diapers so I entered many, many, many cloth diaper giveaways. I didn't think I would win many because I'm not very lucky. I hardly ever win on scratch tickets, I don't win raffles and I'm always out money when I go to the casino. However, when it comes to winning cloth diapers it's a completely different story. I can't remember off the top of my head how many cloth diapers I won (because some are in the diaper pail and wash) but it's somewhere between 15 and 20. Some of the giveaways were for diaper packages of 2-3 diapers. As much as cloth diapers cost, I am so happy that a majority of my stash was free!

Happy Breastfeeding Awareness Week!

I'm a little late but I just wanted to acknowledge that this week is Breastfeeding Awareness Week and tell my breastfeeding story. Before Babycakes was born, I was hesitant about breastfeeding. As unnatural as this may sound, I just felt weirded out by the thought of a baby on my boob. When Babycakes was born, we didn't get to have skin-to-skin contact right away because she needed intervention. She wasn't breathing, she had swallowed meconium, and her heart rate had dropped very low. Her initial Apgar test score was a 1. Very scarey. However, Babycakes is a fighter and rebounded very quickly and was able to be placed on my chest for skin-to-skin after 15 minutes with the doctors and nurses.

The Joys of Growth Spurts

Please excuse my absence, I haven't had a chance to use my computer in a week! Babycakes has been in the middle of a growth spurt and a developmental leap. Needless to say, she has not wanted to leave my arms. She wanted to eat When she wasn't eating, she was 'dozing'. Not truly napping but just taking quick little cat naps so I never had enough time to put her down before she woke up. My parents and my in-laws have both commented that although my husband I were both fussy babies, neither one of us was as fussy or demanding as our little babycakes! Oh joy.
Even though it's been quite an exhausting and demanding week, I'm loving every second with my baby girl cuddled in my arms. I know I will miss this one day when she is running around like a crazy little lady so I will take all the time I can get with her wrapped up in my arms!
Babycakes has been napping for an hour already today, so I'm calling that a small victory. I was really reluctant to put her down, but I thought it would probably be a good thing if I could do a few things for myself today. I'm thinking I may spend some time on pinterest looking for some great recipes to use with peaches and/or blueberries. We have been going to our local orchard and picking blueberries and buying other wonderful farm fresh goodies. In the past week, we have been three times! Obsessed much?! Yesterday, we bought peaches, tomatoes, a red onion, zucchini, swiss chard and corn. I love buying fresh produce. Not only do I get to support a local farm but the produce just tastes so much better. Grocery store tomatoes have no flavor compared to garden fresh. I'll be sad when the harvest season is over but at least I have a few more months to feed my new little obsession.

Where'd the Cuteness Go?

Don't mind the bare blog, I'm in the middle of a re-design but that takes longer than nap time! It'll be back to looking cute soon (I hope)!!

In the meantime, Babycakes can add to the cute factor!

Busy, Busy Weekend!

I have been absent from the blogging world for the past few days but for good reason! I spent last Thursday celebrating my birthday with my little family. I love to shop so my husband took me and babycakes shopping at the outlets. We've brought babycakes shopping with us at places like Target or the grocery store but this was our first big shopping outing with her. Since babycakes is breastfed, I made sure to pump enough milk to bring with us so we could bottle feed. She is not new to a bottle, she has a few a week so my husband can feed her or for when we're out and I'm not sure if there will be somewhere for me to breastfeed. I'm not against breastfeeding in public, I'm just not comfortable doing it. Since the outlet malls are very public places with very little privacy anywhere, I made sure I had twice enough milk with us than I knew we would need, just in case.

Setting a Schedule

My experience teaching  pre-k has taught me how important transitions are to young children. That being said, transitions with my newborn are a whole new ballgame. For the past 7 weeks, I've been following a baby led schedule. As we're approaching Babycakes 2nd month, I've been starting to think about some sort of schedule. Since Babycakes is exclusively breastfed, our schedule will predominantly be dictated by when she wants to eat and for how long she wants to eat. For two days, our schedule has played out like this:

It's just so Pinteresting

I have a serious addiction to Pinterest. When I first got pinterest, I was in heaven. It opened up a whole new world of organization, recipes, children's activities, DIY, and decoration inspiration. I was smitten. Actually, it was more like love at first sight. To make my pins easier to browse, I organized them by different categories that are relevant to me. Since I have pinned hundreds of recipes, I decided to make different boards for different types of food. For example, I have beef, pork, chicken, pasta, veggie and dessert boards. I find it frustrating when I am browsing food boards with all different kinds of food in one place. How are you supposed to find what you are looking for? By organizing my boards by food type, it makes it easier to find recipe inspiration in the hundreds of recipes I've pinned for what I'm craving when making my weekly menus and grocery lists. You can follow me on pinterest for some great food, drink, home decor and outfit inspiration!
For me, one of my favorite things about pinterest is discovering new blogs. While pinning today, I came across a great baking blog and as I was browsing the blog, I pinned so many recipes. One day when babycakes actually naps for longer than 30 minutes at a time, I might get to try some. Today, I found these recipes that I would love to try asap! Happy pinning!

French Onion Dip
New York Times Chocolate Chip Cookies
Sweet Hawaiian Yeast Bread

My babycakes has been smiling during her active sleep stage since she was about a week or week and a half old. She started smiling socially at about 4 weeks old but trying to catch her smile on camera was like trying to get a picture of the loch ness monster! As fast as her smile would come, it would go away. It would disappear before I could even think about grabbing the camera or my phone she would be back to frowning. In the last few days, her 'sunny side' had finally started to come through. She has been a very curious and alert baby since birth but in the last week or so she has been doing some serious focusing on our faces, voices and interactions with her. Her new found interest in social interactions has lead to more 'play time', focusing more on her books during story time and practicing her coo's and ahh's. It also meant being able to see her beautiful smile more often and for longer periods of time. Because she was smiling longer, I was finally able to catch it on camera...yay!

Meet my Babycakes!

This post has been long, long overdue! My beautiful little babycakes was born in May of 2012 and boy did my life change! I'm not going to post my birth story at this moment, as it was long and slightly traumatic but maybe one day I will. As much as you prepare for it, you can never be fully prepared for life with your first child! My beautiful little baby girl was only 6lb. 1oz at birth and 20 inches long. I may be slightly biased but I think she is the most beautiful baby girl I've ever seen!
I am trying to resurrect my blog as I have been very, very neglectful in past months but it is very difficult to find time to post when you have a baby who doesn't nap. That's right, she is not a sleeper. Lots of newborns sleep all day and seem to almost never be awake. Not my babycakes. Even at a week old she would stay awake for hours at a time, take a short nap, be awake for hours, and so on and so on. Although her sleeping habits leave me exhausted, I'm loving every minute of my life with my baby girl!
When I have the chance, I will be blogging about life with babycakes, different recipes to try and even some DIY projects I'll be taking on. Until then, here are some looks at my little babycakes newborn photo session. These were taken at 6 days old.

Isn't she beautiful?! Love, love, love my little babycakes!

Baby K's Nursery

Last summer, the nursery was an office space that we never used. This is what it looked like:

It's kind of embarrassing how empty and undecorated it was. But when I say we never used it, we NEVER used it. Our laptop was always either in the living room or the rec room and that's what we use 99.9% of the time.

This is what the office space looks like now as the nursery for our baby girl:

Baby K's room isn't quite finished. We are still looking for some blue accents, we need to get a changing pad to put on the dresser, we want to add some wall art with her name and I'm still deciding what I want to do for bedding. I love bumpers but I'm not sure if I want to spend the money on bumpers that will just be there for looks. If I get them, I'm not planning on using them in the crib until she's older. I'm also contemplating whether or not to get  a crib skirt. The crib really looks unfinished without the bumper and skirt. Oh the choices...
I'm really happy that the room is just about complete!

33 Weeks 2 days

I can't believe I'm already 33 weeks! Time is really flying but at the same time I'm ready to be done. I'm lucky to still be sleeping alright at night but I am so, so tired during the day trying to keep up with my preschoolers. Thank God I'm on April vacation this week!
Baby K is looking great. I've been having weekly non-stress tests to monitor contractions that I've been having since 28 weeks. My doctors believe that the contractions are being caused by dehydration but I'm literally drinking as much as I can. It has been much better since being home this week. It's difficult to drink constantly in the classroom since I can't run to the bathroom whenever I need to.
When I last updated, Baby K was measuring big, by about a week, for her gestational age. At my last growth scan at 32 weeks, she was measuring right on track.
I had my first baby shower last Saturday. I got so many awesome things from my family and I am so thankful for my mom and sister for hosting! One of my favorite gifts was from my friend, a cloth diapering mama! She gave me a Bumgenius freestyle and and Itti-bitti tutto but the best part was she MADE me a bunch of super cute diaper covers! They are adorable and a few of them even had ruffles on the butts! I will have to post pics of them soon. They are so cute I can't wait to use them on Baby K!

23 Weeks

Baby K has been baking for 23 weeks already. I can't believe how fast this pregnancy is flying by! I've been feeling Baby K kicking for weeks but hubs has not been able to feel her yet. I really want him to be able to feel her kicking because that will be his first real connection with the baby. Right now, hubs is working a lot because he coaches basketball on top of his teaching job. Basketball ends later this week so he will be home much more. Hopefully being home more will mean more chances for him to feel Baby K.

Time for an Update!

So it's been a long, long time since I have last updated. I stopped posting regularly last fall. Why? Well, I was just too tired from that dreaded PREGNANCY fatigue. Yes, I'm knocked up ;)
Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy to be pregnant. Today I am 22 weeks. Hubs and I did not announce our pregnancy until the start of my second trimester, although we did tell our families. How do you hide something like that from family? We couldn't, especially since every time we saw her (about once a week), my mom always seemed to wonder (out loud) when she might become a grandmother. There was absolutely no hiding it from her.
Anyways, I decided to change my old blog about green living to blog about my pregnancy and life in general. I thought this blog might be a great place to vent about pregnancy. My pregnancy is a high risk pregnancy because I have a pacemaker from a heart defect I was born with. Because of my heart condition I have been under the watchful eye of several doctors (OB, fetal specialist, cardiologist, pacemaker specialist and a lung doctor for my asthma). I feel like I live in a doctors office because I don't go longer than 2 weeks without seeing someone. Often times I've had 1-2 appointments a week. I complain about how many appointments I have but in reality, I feel so much better knowing that my baby and I are in such good hands. Also on a positive note, from having so many appointments, I've had 5 ultrasounds already because everybody wants to see the baby's heart and make sure it's beating properly. So far, Baby K has a healthy heart and a super strong heart beat.
Hubs is very excited about this pregnancy even though he tries to act manly about it. He hasn't been able to feel Baby K kicking yet on the outside. I've been feeling movement and kicks since I was 17 weeks. Yesterday was the first day I felt Baby K on the outside and of course, Hubs was still asleep. My puppy Brady can sense the changes. He never wants to be far from me or my belly. It's really cute. Rocco, my lab, seems to be oblivious.

Oh, by the way, Baby K is a girl!
